About the laboratory
The Department of Archaeometry and Conservation of Archaeological Artefacts at the Institute of Archaeology conducts archaeometric research and conservation works, primarily on artifacts from the collections of the Institute of Archaeology, but also from other units that deal with historical and archaeological heritage. The activity of the laboratory is constantly changing and developing, mainly thanks to the scientific projects in which our laboratory staff participate.
Scope of work
Conservation works performed in the laboratory involve artifacts that vary in material and chronology. In particular, the works include:
- metal artefacts (mainly iron and copper alloys as well as non-ferrous metals: silver, lead, and others)
- archaeological leathers (primarily wet leather artifacts)
- archaeological wood (dry and wet with a maximum size of 1m in length)
- textiles
- artefacts with a complex material structure (e.g., combinations of metal, leather and wood)
Archaeometric research, includes archaeological issues and topics from the borderline of the humanities and natural sciences. An important area of research is use-wear and residue analysis (performed by PhD Bernadeta Kufel-Diakowska). Other research issues (such as chemical composition analysis or basic metallographic research) are solved by spectral and microscopic methods (Prof. Beata Miazga).
