Kwartniki śląskie. Tom I. Księstwo fürstenberskie. Typ CLIPEVS BAVWARIE
(Silesian Kwartnik Coins. Volume I. The Duchy of Fürstenberg. The CLIPEVS BAVWARIE Type)

We are pleased to present the latest publication of the Institute of Archaeology, produced in cooperation with the University of Wrocław Press. The book by Dawid Maciejczuk Kwartniki śląskie. Tom I. Księstwo fürstenberskie. Typ CLIPEVS BAVWARIE (Silesian Kwartnik Coins. Volume I. The Duchy of Fürstenberg. The CLIPEVS BAVWARIE Type), is another volume in the Bibliotheca Nummaria Leopoldina series, initiated by Prof. Borys Paszkiewicz. The research findings presented in the volume are closely related to a scholarly project funded by the National Science Centre (Poland), entitled The Great Monetary Reform in Central Europe: Low Countries, French and Italian patterns and the modernization of Silesian coinage in the kwartnik period (2020/39/O/HS3/00475).

The publication constitutes a scholarly study of the most frequently occurring Silesian kwartnik coins of the CLIPEVS BAVWARIE type. The principal aim of the research was to establish the chronology and places of issue of these coins. For this purpose, the author compiled a register of kwartniks held in Polish and foreign collections, both public and private. On the basis of the collected material, a method for classifying varieties and die variants was developed, followed by an analysis of mint marks observed on the coins. Of particular importance are the overstrikes presented in the study, which made it possible to establish the relative chronology of other kwartnik types as well. A further stage of the research involved analysing die links and demonstrating when and where the production of the CLIPEVS BAVWARIE type was most probably undertaken. The classification of varieties and die variants was intended to identify the structure of the coin issues. This is the first study of its kind in the history of research on Silesian kwartnik coins.
