The earliest Holocene wanderers through the Gobi Desert evidenced by the radiocarbon chronology of the lakeshore settlement near the Tsakhiurtyn Hondi, Mongolia

A new article co-authored by Prof. Mirosław Masojć, Grzegorz Michalec MA, and Prof. Józef Szykulski from our Institute has been published in the latest issue of the prestigious journal Radiocarbon. The study focuses on the radiocarbon dating of prehistoric settlement in southern Mongolia. The article presents a series of radiocarbon dates obtained from charcoal and charred plant macroremains from the area of the ancient lakeshore at Baruun Khuree, located in the Gobi-Altai region.

The AMS radiocarbon series (14C) enables the stratified deposits under investigation to be linked with some of the earliest evidence for the activity of highly mobile hunter-gatherer groups operating in the southern Gobi Desert during the Early Holocene (c. 11,250–10,500 cal BP).

The results presented form part of a broader research project, Around Tsakhiurtyn Hondi. Research on the Stone Age of the borderland area between Altai and the Gobi desert in Mongolia (2019/33/B/HS3/01113), conducted by the Institute of Archaeology at the University of Wrocław and funded by the National Science Centre.
