Eighty Years of Archaeology at the University of Wrocław

The year 2025 marks a remarkable anniversary—the eightieth anniversary of archaeology at the University of Wrocław. To commemorate this occasion, the University of Wrocław Press has published a comprehensive volume entitled Eighty Years of Archaeology at the University of Wrocław, edited by Mirosław Masojć and Jerzy Piekalski.

The publication offers a synthesis of eight decades of intensive development in archaeological research in Wrocław—from the immediate post-war beginnings, through successive stages of the institutional formation of the academic community, to the contemporary, interdisciplinary character of the discipline. The authors—members of staff of the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Wrocław—present both the history of research into individual periods and the development of methodological infrastructure, archaeometry, non-European studies, numismatics, and historical archaeology.

The volume is not only a chronicle of the institution but also a testimony to the transformations of research methods, scholarly agendas, and generations of researchers who have shaped—and continue to shape—Wrocław archaeology. The publication forms part of a series of earlier jubilee studies from 1995 and 2020, constituting their expanded and updated continuation.

It represents an important contribution to reflection on the role of academic archaeology—its tradition, present condition, and future challenges.
